Founded in 1995 by software entrepreneur Kevin Harvey, Rhys Vineyards stands as one of North America’s most extraordinary wine estates. Inspired by the great domaines of Burgundy, Rhys focuses on producing site-specific Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from mountain terroirs in California.
Unlike the vast valley floors of Napa, Rhys sits high above the fog line in the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains (alongside select cool-climate sites in Anderson Valley). Perched on steep, high-elevation ridges up to 2,300 feet above sea level,Rhys vineyards capture a unique interplay of mountain sunlight, cool Pacific breezes, and shallow mineral soils.
The Philosophy: High Altitude, Deep Mineral Drive
The core belief at Rhys is that world-class wine requires shallow, mineral-rich soils and extreme meso-climates. To achieve this, the estate planted its vineyards from scratch on pristine mountain sites that had never previously been cultivated for vines.
Mountain Altitudes: Vineyards sit between 1,200 and 2,300 feet elevation. The vines ripen above the coastal fog, benefiting from intense sunlight while cool Pacific winds regulate temperatures.
Geological Diversity: The estate sits along the San Andreas Fault system, providing a rare collage of soils—ranging from decomposed shale and sandstone to rare outcroppings of soft limestone.
High-Density Planting: Planted at up to 7,000 vines per hectare (roughly double the California average), forcing root systems deep into the rock for mineral absorption and natural water regulation.
Biodynamic Farming: All estate vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, nurturing healthy living soils without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Alpine Vineyard (Santa Cruz Mountains) - 1,200–1,400 ft

Non-Interventionist Winemaking
Under the direction of winemaker Jeff Brinkman, the cellar work at Rhys is guided by a commitment to minimal handling, allowing the high-elevation terroir to speak clearly:
Native Yeasts: Fermentations rely strictly on naturally occurring indigenous yeasts.
Whole-Cluster Inclusion: Pinot Noir is fermented with high percentages of whole clusters (often 50% to 100%), lending structural frame, herbal complexity, and longevity.
Gentle Extraction: Foot-treading and gentle gravity flows replace mechanical pumping to preserve delicate aromatics.
Subtle Oak Integration: Aged in custom French oak barrels (crafted from custom-selected tight-grain French forests) with low percentages of new oak (typically 15%–25%).
Unfined & Unfiltered: Bottled without fining or filtration to maintain full texture and natural energy.

Wines from Rhys Vineyards trade heavy alcohol and overripe fruit for tension, aromatic complexity, and electric acidity.
Rhys Pinot Noirs display forest floor, wild berry, blood orange, and crushed stone aromatics, supported by fine, architectural tannins built for 10 to 20+ years of bottle maturation.
Rhys Chardonnays are chiseled, saline, and laser-focused, reminiscent of top-tier Chablis or Puligny-Montrachet with a bright California mineral finish.

RHYS, Horseshoe Vineyards Chardonnay 2021 - WA97
At the apex of Rhys's outstanding array of Chardonnays, the 2021 Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard is a modern classic. The nose unfolds slowly, but steadily ascends from the glass with scents of crushed stones, mandarin rind, pomelo and a subtle crème brûlée richness that hangs in the background. The palate begins coiled and springlike, continuously expanding and adding dimension throughout the three days I spent with it. Simultaneously glossy, broad, angular and tense, it is the most texturally complex of the single-vineyard Chardonnays at this stage. This needs at least another five years in the cellar and should be on the ascent for a decade beyond that. A benchmark wine for the Santa Cruz Mountains.RHYS, Alpine Vineyards Chardonnay 2022 - WA96
As is typical with this site in both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the 2022 Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard opens on a shy note before ceaselessly escalating in dimension and complexity. The nose combines the site's signature bright, lifted fragrance with intense but ethereal orchard fruit aromas and ever-increasing chalky, saline flourishes. The palate is plush yet pliable, with great dexterity and balance that transitions to a taut yet layered finish of focused, structured acidity and delicious, bright, clean citrus tinges. It is a beautiful showing that combines electric energy with alluring nuance.
RHYS, Alpine Hillside Vineyards 2022 - WA98
The 2022 Pinot Noir Alpine Hillside Vineyard is a quintessential combination of sumptuous, composed and refined. It feels like a different wine entirely, rather than a more intense iteration of the regular Alpine Vineyard bottling. As always, this wine is a moving target in the glass, combining all manner of pure, fragrant, herbal aromas and deep, savory bass notes wrapped in a core of perfectly ripe, revolving door of red fruits. The palate perfectly marries luscious, multidimensional richness while remaining trim, fit and focused. It concludes with a lush, staining, ethereal and expansive finish, showing off weightlessly swelling tannins and a haunting, floating quality that is simply captivating. While this wine's tannin structure is always some degree of persistent, this vintage is less relentlessly grippy relative to recent iterations, allowing for a slightly earlier drinking window.RHYS, Skyline vineyard 2024 - WA98
The 2024 Pinot Noir Skyline Vineyard opens with its quintessentially floral and expressive bouquet, albeit exuding a more herbal perfume in this vintage than the distinctly floral qualities it often delivers. With time in the glass, it increasingly functions as a sort of amalgam of its counterparts from the central section of the Santa Cruz Mountains—I also found a meaty note here that evoked a bit of the profile I typically associate with Horseshoe, while its herbal profile was comparable to that of Alpine. The mouthfeel, however, takes on a wholly singular dimension in the portfolio, offering a stunning combination of silky richness, tension, concentration and utter finesse, all of which sum into a similarly multifaceted finish of ultra-refined tannins, racy acidity, retronasal perfume and striking length. As I find almost with every vintage, I find this to be the most memorable and distinctive wine of the single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, with only the Hillside bottlings from Horsehouse and Alpine attaining an equal or even greater degree of complexity.
